Nov 5th: San Mateo Wilderness

Driving Directions from I-15 to San Mateo Wilderness: Tenaja Falls Trailhead

I-15 exit Clinton Keith Rd, go west. 

Clinton Keith becomes Tenaja Rd after 2 miles.

Continue another 9.8 miles; Right on Cleveland Forest Rd (7S04).  If you start going downhill, you have gone too far.  After a mile you will pass the Tenaja Trailhead and the Wilderness boundary on the left; keep going another approx. 5 miles.  Trailhead is at the bottom of the canyon, on the left.     15 miles total from I-15.

Oct 8th 7am: Big Laguna Loop

This is your last chance to get some mileage in before our Ultimate Hike.  We will be doing 2 loops in a figure 8 so you will have a chance to come back to your car to get supplies and change gear.  Total hike will be about 20 miles.  This will have some climbing, but we are mainly going for the mileage.  Great scenery and views of the Desert.  We will summit Monument and Garnet Peaks.  You will also get to sample about 8 miles of the PCT.

Hike starts at 7am, we should be done by 4:30.  Hike starts at the Penny Pine Trailhead, 12031-12203 San Diego County Road S 1, Julian, CA 92036.  An Adventure Pass is required to park, or a National Parks Annual pass will work.

Oct 1st 7am: Dripping Springs Loop

This is an opportunity to hike 21 miles into one of San Diego’s Counties most remote areas, the Agua Tibia Wilderness on the western end of the Palomar Mountains.  We will start out climbing for about 7 miles, which will be about 80% of the climbing for this hike.  We will take a break  at this point and you can decide whether you want to continue on.  THIS WILL BE THE TOUGHEST HIKE WE DO!  Both mileage and time, this hike will give you a good idea what Oct. 15th will be like.

6am Carpool meeting location is the Park n Ride at the SW corner of I-15 and El Norte Pkwy in Escondido.

Sep 24th 7:30am- Cuyamaca & Oakzanita Peak

This will be our first long hike, about 18 miles.  We only have 3 hikes left before our Ultimate Hike, time to see how your doing.  Check out the details for the next 3 weeks.

7:30 am to 4pm. Meet at the large parking area on the east side of the road, about a 1/2 mile south of the Cuyamaca State Park Visitors Center, it’s not signed.  11569 Calif 79, Descanso, CA 91916 (this address won’t work with MapQuest).    We will  be doing 2 loops bringing us back to our cars to refuel and have a quick rest.  We will start out with a climb up to Oakzanita Peak, then some mileage through rolling hills.  The second loop will have some climbing as well.

Bring plenty of fluids, snacks and lunch.  Change of socks might feel good.

Sep 17th 7:30am: Black Mtn Open Space

Meet at Hilltop Community Park in Penasquitos, 9749 Oviedo Way, San Diego 92129.  This is a roller coaster, not as steep as the Fortuna’s, but a good conditioning workout.  As always, bring plenty of water and a snack.  We should be back to the cars by 1pm.

NOTE: Long hikes start next weekend.

Sep 10th 7:30am Fortuna’s at Mission Trails

North and South Fortuna’s in Mission Trails Park.  Short steep climbs, this is a good conditioning hike.  Nice views of the city and backcounty.  Bring 3 qtrs of water, electrolytes, lunch and snack.

Sep 3rd 7am Mt Woodson from Blue Sky

Howard will be hiking to the top of Mt Woodson, starting at the Blue Sky Preserve, 16281 Espola Rd, Poway 92064.  About 14 miles, fairly steep.  

HIKE STARTS AT 7AM SHARP! Arrive by 6:45am.

Aug 27th Santa Ysebal 7am

The trailhead is about 3 miles north of downtown Julian, give yourself plenty of time to get there.  Looks like the weather is going to be HOT!  Bring 3 quarts of water and a quart of electrolytes, plus lunch and snacks.  This hike is through beautiful rolling hills of pastures and oak trees, and a few cows.  This weeks training goal is to keep a sustained pace,  and only stop when you really need to.  We should be back to the cars by 3pm.  NO restrooms or water available.

Aug 20th Cowles & Pyles Peak 7:30am

Week 4 of Ultimate Hike training.  Cowles Mtn and Pyles Peak from the Santee side.  Big Rock Park , 8525 Mesa Rd, Santee 92071.  Meet at the trailhead sign along Mesa Rd south of the park.  Hike is about 10 miles out and back, with a pretty good climb.  After we summit Cowles, we are going to continue on to Pyles Peak.   This hike provides good cardio training, which will help you on the first section of our big hike event.  Bring 3 qt of fluids and snacks.  We should be back to the cars by 12:30.

Aug 13th Daley Ranch 7:30am

Week 3 Team Training Hike.  Meet by the covered bench on northside of parking lot at preserve entrance: 2251 La Honda Dr, Escondido, CA.  There are restrooms.  Hydration and Nutrition Clinic NOTES will cover how much water and electrolytes to pack, and feeding/eating strategies. 

This hike is a roller coaster, short steep hills, followed by long flat stretches.  Bring 3 quarts of fluids, snacks and lunch.  We are planning to hike 12 miles and be back to the cars by 2pm.  If you need to bail out early, there will be several opportunities to do so.
